Why Christians Should Vote

Okay... the big day is coming soon. Election day. I have many memories from when I was young, of going with my parents to a small country courthouse with American flags flying outside, for them to vote. We'd leave with "I voted" stickers and big smiles.

What a beautiful memory.

I want to have that America forever.

I've talked to many people who are going to vote. I already have voted. I've heard from some people that they aren't going to vote. Many things I've heard are "I am not voting because both are for abortions." or "I am not voting because I feel my vote doesn’t matter." or "I am not voting because I don’t like any of the candidates." or "I am not voting because I believe the system is corrupt."

Which, I believe if they want to vote or not, it is their right, but I want to encourage people to vote for many reasons. Read on for why you should vote as a Christian.

Voting is a way to actively participate in shaping your society. We need to stand up and make a difference because if we don't voice our concerns by voting for the policies that we care about, our nation will just continue to go down the drain. I'd hate to see that.

I know that the America I grew up in is probably never coming back 100%, but I'm hoping we can at least resurrect her so she's at least 50% better than now. For our future kid's sake. I would love for them to be proud of their home country like I always have been.

Our country (and world) has been headed in some scary directions away from our Biblical values. Every day, you see new headlines that are borderline scary, disgusting, and outright sad. It just makes you wonder when Jesus is coming back, but also reminds you that we are here still so that means we are supposed to be here helping build His kingdom on earth while waiting for his return. He is patient when it comes to returning. Wants more to come to Him.

“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” - Jeremiah 29:7

When I saw this verse I was surprised, because when it was originally written it was talking about when Israelites were brought into exile in Babylon, which was a hostile nation to Jews. And isn't that a great way to describe how many nations have become in the last ten years? Hostile. Hostile to Christians.

Here, God tells us to pray to the Lord for the peace and prosperity of the place they are, because if they do, if it prospers, then they will too. This is a great reminder for us. If America prospers, so will we. And so will the world. Which we know is true. We must make a difference. That is through our voices, actions, prayers, and daily walk.

So here are reasons, that you should vote as a Christian:

1. Civic Duty and Stewardship:

Christians are called to be stewards of what God has entrusted to them, which includes the social structures around them. By voting, you can influence policies that promote justice, peace, and care.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” - Genesis 2:15

In this verse, God assigns Adam the responsibility of tending to and caring for the Garden of Eden. This command to work and care for the garden is an act of stewardship—Adam is entrusted to cultivate and preserve what God has created.

Similarly, we should be doing this too, because God made us all and placed us here at this time. Voting and participating in civic duties can be viewed as part of our stewardship over the "garden" of our communities and nation. Just as Adam was responsible for maintaining the wellbeing of the garden, we are responsible for contributing to the welfare of our society. Voting is a practical way of exercising this stewardship, as it allows us to influence decisions and support leaders who aim to uphold values of justice, peace, and care for the vulnerable, thereby “tending” to our community.

In both scenarios, stewardship reflects a commitment to cultivating what’s been entrusted to us, whether it’s a physical garden or the broader "garden" of our society. Voting, when approached thoughtfully, is a way to actively care for and shape our nation’s future, reflecting the heart of Genesis 2:15’s call to nurture and protect what’s been placed in our care.

  1. The Government Will Be On His Shoulders

This is a Bible verse that I have heard so much whenever election time comes around. Especially if a candidate that you don't like gets in. I've heard people say "Well, Jesus is still on the throne." or "The government is on His shoulders." Which is all true, but I think that we misunderstand the meaning of "the government will be on his shoulders."

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

When it's talking about government here... it's actually not referring to our worldly governments today. If you read the whole chapter it's talking about the government of the promised son and of a future time when Jesus will rule over a tangible, real, earthly geopolitical kingdom made up of all the kingdoms and governments in the world. He is our King now and will be FOREVER whenever He does return.

This verse indicates that God does not directly place each ruler in power; rather, He gives us the power to elect our leaders. The decisions made by voters reflect their values and priorities, whether they support Christ-like policies that promote justice, mercy, and righteousness, or worldly policies that may lead to division and strife. Furthermore, the absence of participation in the electoral process—by choosing not to vote—can also influence the outcome, leaving leadership in the hands of those who may not align with God’s principles. Thus, the responsibility lies with individuals to engage thoughtfully in the political process, aligning their choices with their faith and values.

We can only await to see Jesus being our King and ruler. I can't wait. It'll be amazing. He's the only one who is a perfect, just leader, unlike the earthly kings who lead people astray. This messianic king would not just bear governmental authority but would do so in a way that brings lasting peace and righteousness—something no earthly king has ever fully accomplished.

If you do not want to choose between the lesser of two evils, you’ll have to get over it because until Jesus is on the ballot, that is the only choice. - Dr. Ben Carson

Can you imagine Jesus on the ballot? How great that would be. Until that day, we must wait and vote aligning with our values.

  1. A Nation Falls Under A Lack of Guidance.

"For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers." - Proverbs 11:14

Proverbs 11:14 highlights the critical role of guidance and wisdom in leadership, emphasizing that a nation’s success hinges on sound advice and counsel. When we vote for policies that align with our values, we play an active role in shaping the leadership of our communities and nation. By supporting candidates who prioritize wise counsel and demonstrate a willingness to seek guidance, we help foster an environment where leaders are more likely to make decisions that benefit the common good. This aligns with the Biblical principle that effective leadership is not about exercising power in isolation but about surrounding oneself with trusted advisers and listening to diverse perspectives.

Moreover, our votes send a message about the kind of leadership we desire. When we advocate for policies that reflect moral integrity and a communal responsibility, we encourage leaders to embrace those ideals. In doing so, we contribute to a culture where wisdom and thoughtful decision-making are valued over mere popularity or political expediency. Ultimately, by engaging in the electoral process and voting for leaders who embody these principles, we can help create a society that is rooted in the values that reflect God's will.

What's God's will?

Here are some verses about His will.

  1. Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

  1. Romans 12:2

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

  1. 1 Thessalonians 4:3

"It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality."

  1. Ephesians 2:10

"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

  1. 1 Peter 2:15

"For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people."

  1. Colossians 1:9-10

"For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way."

  1. Philippians 2:13

"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."

  1. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

  1. Matthew 6:33

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

  2. Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

  3. Psalm 127:3

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him."

  4. James 4:17

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

With verses like all of these you can see the values that Jesus would want us to have as Christians. As Christians, we should let the Word of God lead us when it comes to everything in our lives. If every Christian voted with their Bible written on their heart... we'd live in a much different world today. A better one. Let me repeat that.

If every Christian voted with their Bible written on their heart... we'd live in a much different world today. A better one.

  1. Choosing Godly Leaders Is Biblical

There are many verses that show choosing Godly leaders is Biblical, Like:

"When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan." - Proverbs 29:2

And another:

But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but let them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied. - Exodus 18:21-23

  1. The Importance of Being A Voice for the Voiceless

It's amazing how many times we are told to do right, speak up, and help those who have no voices. All of the Bible verses in this blog post can be used to pray for our nation and to be used to figure out who you will vote for.

    1. Proverbs 31:8-9

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

    2. Isaiah 1:17

"Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow."

    3. Psalm 82:3-4

"Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."

    4. Luke 4:18

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free."

    5. James 1:27

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."

    6. Matthew 25:40

"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'"

    7. Micah 6:8

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

    8. Jeremiah 22:3

"This is what the Lord says: 'Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.'"

    9. Isaiah 58:6-7

"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"

    10. Proverbs 14:31

"Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God."

  2. Importance of Not Being A ONE issue voter

These days people are swayed by emotions with media when it comes to touchy subjects. You know the ones I'm talking about.

Here are some Bible verses that encourage us to remain steadfast and not to sway or shift in our faith, values, or commitments. And this should also be with our political values too.

    1. 1 Corinthians 15:58

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."

    2. James 1:6-8

"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do."

    3. Hebrews 10:23

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful."

    4. Ephesians 4:14

"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming."

    5. Colossians 1:22-23

"But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel."

    6. Philippians 1:27

"Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel."

    7. 2 Peter 3:17

"Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position."

    8. Psalm 112:6

"Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever."

And last but not least, this one:

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." -Matthew 7:24-25

Build your house on the Rock by following the word and listening to what it says. Use that to lead you in your voting. Because IF EVERY CHRISTIAN DID THIS... real change would happen.

Now, a question for you? Are you going to vote?
