I just got back from the Black Hills of South Dakota with my husband and some of his family that came to visit from South Africa. It was a lovely time in the Hills and it got me thinking that I should write up a blog post with the things we always enjoy. South Dakota is like a second home to us--basically is since it's just a little south of us in North Dakota. *wink*
I've been going there since I was a little girl, plus, I also got engaged there. So I know some pretty fun things to check out while you're there. You'll want to make sure you come prepared for any kind of weather as the hills really love to attract rain and precipitation of some sort--I've been there when it's thunder storms, when it's hailing, and also snowing. But it's beautiful no matter the weather.
One of the crowned jewels of the Black Hills is Mount Rushmore.
1. Mount Rushmore National Memorial

No trip to the Black Hills is complete without visiting Mount Rushmore. It's an iconic symbol of American history with the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln carved into the granite.
Make sure to take the Presidential Trail for closer views and unique perspectives of the monument. It's one of our FAVE trails there. We also love going to the Sculpture Illumination and Evening Lighting Program at night. It's very patriotic and beautiful. I tear up every time.
If it's a hot day, the ice cream shop there has some yummy ice cream too.

2. Custer State Park
Custer State Park is a must-see with its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. Drive the scenic Needles Highway (In picture below) and Iron Mountain Road, and don’t miss the chance to see the bison herds. If you're feeling adventurous, hike to the top of Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) (This is where I got engaged), the highest point east of the Rockies. Sylvan Lake (in picture above), with its crystal-clear waters and picturesque rock formations, is perfect for kayaking, fishing, or a leisurely stroll.

3. Crazy Horse Memorial
The Crazy Horse Memorial is a work-in-progress dedicated to the Native American leader with the same name (Crazy Horse). The scale of the project is awe-inspiring. I've been there twice. It'll be really cool once it's finished. There's also a pull out nearby where you can take a picture of it from the road if you don't want to go in and pay for it until it's finished.
4. Spearfish Canyon
This is a gorgeous drive. For nature lovers, a drive through Spearfish Canyon is a must. The scenic byway offers breathtaking views of limestone cliffs, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls. Popular stops include Bridal Veil Falls, Roughlock Falls, and the hiking trails that lead you deeper into the canyon.
5. Deadwood
Step back in time with a visit to Deadwood, a historic town known for its Gold Rush past. When you visit you'll be able to walk into history--by strolling down the same streets as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. You can also go visit the cemetery on the hill. Many people from western history are buried there. This town lets you get a glimpse into the old days.
6. Badlands National Park
A short drive from the Black Hills, the Badlands National Park offers a starkly beautiful landscape of eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires.
