What Not To Do When Editing Your Novel

You DON’T Want To Do This, while Editing…

What Not To Do When Editing Your Novel (1)Editing a novel can be a lot of work.

Many people don’t know how much work really goes into the books on the shelves at bookstores.

People don’t see the thousands of hours spent in a dark room editing, cutting words, rewriting them, doing all that before a deadline, and then doing it all over again.

I thought I’d share with you all some of the things I learned from editing my book The Mason of Hearts this last time. These are the things a writer shouldn’t do while editing their novel. I am going to be fully truthful with you here.

… focus on everything that needs fixed right now. (Instead focus on one thing at a time. Focus on the chapter that you are on NOW, and finish that. Then move on.)

… procrastinate. (I know this is a hard one. While editing The Mason of Hearts I really wanted to stop and watch a movie instead. But, I pushed that thought out the door. Told myself, “When I’m done… then I can.”

… not reward yourself. (Don’t sit at your computer all day long. Instead reward yourself and get up to take a walk with your dog, for a break. Go for a run. Getting up and away from the screen will do you wonders. Don’t reward yourself with snacks.)

… sit on social media. (I had to tell myself no to that as well. Although, every so often I would check it out.)

… compare yourself. (NEVER, compare yourself to others.)

… give yourself too much to do. (You only have 24 hours a day. Definitely sit down at the beginning of the week and schedule your editing time in. No excuses. You want that book DONE right?)

… give yourself excuses. (Don’t. How bad do you want this book to be finished?)

… just do rewrites on the computer. Grab your notebook and pen. (Sometimes my best ideas come to me when I am sitting with my notebook and pen. Channel your inner Master.)

… eat at your keyboard. (If you eat in front of your computer. You are going to have a much bigger chance of over eating.)

… sleep late and expect to get everything done that you wanted to get done. (Although, I know sometimes a few extra hours of sleep really does help.)

… forget to sleep.

Add your own editing don’ts to the list…
