We are all pretty busy these days, aren’t we? I like to think of it as commuting to a corporate job during rush hour. That’s kind of how life is right now- BUSY.
For the last month, I’ve been practicing yoga at a local yoga studio where they have hot yoga classes (Seriously my new FAVE!), hard cardio classes that make you feel like you are crying from how much you are sweating (It might be tears too, though!), and relaxing restorative classes that help you relax and put off the stress from your day.
And then besides practicing yoga, I’ve also been listening to guided meditation podcasts. I’ll list a few of my favorites in this podcast.
I feel like it’s so easy to get consumed.
Do you feel me?
There are the day-to-day stresses, bills to be paid, clothing to fold, dishes to wash, among other things. And then by the end of the day you flop onto the couch like a dead fish. You know it.
Finding The Quiet In The Storm
When the craziness is blurring around you, it’s important that you are taking care of yourself. Because if you aren’t, then your body and mind are not going to do very well. They will take a cruise to a sad unhealthy place, that no one ever wants to go.
Some of the ways I like to find the quiet are:
- Reading a good book, while cuddling with Loki.
- Taking a bath with a good bath bomb. (Which you can double this by reading a good book in the bath as well.) Or by listening to a relaxing podcast.
- Going for a walk.
What Yoga & Meditation Has Taught Me
Yoga and meditation has taught me first and foremost, to breathe. You might think that sounds kind of funny. Because our body automatically keeps us breathing.
But, I feel like when life gets hectic and stressful that one of the first things we start doing is holding our breath and gritting our teeth together tightly, letting our shoulders rise to our ears, and also slumping. And then your joints and muscles all feel tied in knots, tightly. And when we are tight and feel stressed our body starts feeling more stressed and somewhat in pain as well.
So one of the biggest things I’ve taken away from yoga and meditation, whenever you feel hectic thoughts or stress coming your way, close your eyes, go someplace quiet if you can, lay down on the ground if you can (so you feel grounded) and breath. FOCUS on breathing in through your nose and breathing out through your mouth.
I want you to imagine there is a tube going from your mouth to your stomach. And when you breath in, the air is going straight to your tummy. When you breathe in, let you tummy fill up with air. And then breathe it out.
Count To 5
Something that really helps me relax and slow down my breathing is to breathe in for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, and then let it out for 5 seconds, and then hold your breath for 5 seconds again before taking another breath of air. Other then calming your breathing this will help you get rid of stale air in your lungs.
Focus On Where Your Pain Or Tension Is
When you are breathing in through your nose and your stomach fills with air, I imagine the air traveling to the areas in my body that are sore or have tension. Envision the air going around those areas. And then breathe out. Do it again and focus on your breathing. Soon you will feel a lot more relaxed.
