On Tuesday, January 23rd I went to see Rachel Hollis speak in Fargo. Our Chamber of Commerce brought her in. A few months ago when I found out she was coming to town, I figured that I’d buy myself a ticket as an early birthday gift! YES, it’s my birthday today (January 24th)!
Can I say WOW!
I’m sure you all know who Rachel Hollis is! But if you don’t, where have you been? hahaha… Just kidding! This year she published a book called “Girl, Wash Your Face” and it’s an amazing book! I’ll be hosting a contest when I get back from South Africa to give away a copy of her book to one special winner! And that’s not all. You will get some other fun goodies as well!
Some of My BIGGEST Takeaways
I want to share with you all some of my best takeaways. I absolutely love personal development and anything that helps me chase my dreams. I was actually moved to tears at one point during Rachel’s talk.
- “We tend to compare ourselves where we feel most insecure. And we only compare areas of our lives where we are struggling.”
- She talked about how harmful it is when you compare your real life with other people’s fake social media account. Not that people’s social accounts are like FAKE. But if you think of it, we aren’t exactly honest with social media all the time. We edit the heck out of our pictures. And many people change how they look with programs like Facetune.
- Rachel talked about the importance of staying away from areas online that make you feel bad. If scrolling on Facebook and Instagram… get off there, girl.
- Excuses: “I wanna do this… but I don’t have the time.” I’ve heard this so much from so many people! Rachel said “Then I ask them to tell me about the last season of this is us” and then, they get all excited and start telling her about whats happening. And all she could think was. “But you don’t have time to go to the gym?”
- The only thing that stands between success and no success is, what you want most and what you want right now.
- The quickest way to change your emotional state is to change your physical state. The quickest way. We can’t always control or brains and anxiety. But the quickest way you can change how you are feeling is to move.
- Rachel found that if she moved her body, she could manage her anxiety.
Towards the end of the talk, Rachel said, “I am not special. I am one of the hardest workers, you know. I am one of hardest workers. That’s why I’m standing up here. I mean, I grew up on a street called weed patch highway.”
If Rachel Can Be Successful So Can You!
You just have to find the dream in your heart and go with it. She talked about that. You know those moments where you find yourself saying “What if… I wrote a book.” or “What if… I ran a half marathon.”? At those moments, Rachel said that is when your heart is begging your head to just get out of the way so you can achieve that dream. It makes sense, doesn’t it?
My absolute favorite thing that Rachel spoke about was this. It’s an exact quote:
There is nothing wrong with being there for those you care about, but There is something wrong with you needing someone else’s good opinion of you in order to be worthy. You will make yourself smaller and smaller so you won’t bother someone else.
I never realized it, but I think that’s something that I’ve struggled with in the past.
