I’m Planning To Elevate In 2018

I picture myself hiking up a grand mountain surrounded by beautiful trees, chirping birds, and wild animals. That peaceful sound of silence with the wind blowing through my hair. In some areas of the hike, you are the ONLY person on the trail. Revitalizing.

I know from experience when climbing a mountain, you can be overwhelmed by the gorgeousness of nature. That’s a good thing, because it helps you forget about the strenuous activity you are partaking in to scale the mountain.

Last year I came up with a word for 2017. It was reach. (On Wednesday, I’ll be sharing a post on how my 2017 word turned out.) When I started brainstorming what I want to achieve in 2018 and what my word for the New Year could be, I started thinking about climbing a mountain and how peaceful it could be.

And yet how tough climbing a mountain can be. With all the things, I am going to achieve this year, I decided the mountain image was perfect for inspiring my word because amidst how hard climbing a mountain would be, it would all be worth it in the end. I’ll make it to the top and look back, seeing how far I’d climbed. I’ll be happier, healthier, and more successful.

So I decided my one word for 2018 is:

one word, 2018, devin berglund joubert

Elevate: | ˈeləˌvāt |

verb [with object]

Raise or lift (something) up to a higher position. • Raise to a more important or impressive level.  Increase the level or amount of (something.)

Why Elevate?

  • I want to get closer to God than I’ve ever been before and to do that I need to climb that Holy Mountain to get closer and spend quiet time with him. Because through that, I’ll be happier and more succesful.
  • I want to elevate to another level when it comes to creating relationships with people. I want people to see my genuine interest in them. Whenever I talk to someone, I want them to have my complete attention. So they feel loved.
  • I want to elevate my physical health and mental thought life so I’m an all-around better person.

What’s your word for 2018?

When A Surprise Visit Turns Into A Fairytale Engagement

June 25th, 2014

Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale.

[Tweet “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale.”]

I’ve always loved that saying. And thinking back on it now, I can’t believe that life gave me a fairytale.

On June 11th (this is funny looking back at this because, little did I know that in two years I’d be getting married on the same day) I went to Fargo with my sister for a girl’s day filled with back massages, Chinese food, manicures, and arial yoga. That’s a perfect combination for a lovely day!fairytales, Long Distance Relationships, surprise visits, love, Devin Berglund, Johan Joubert, Engagement, Proposal

Later that night we were going to pick up my sister’s friend from college, at the airport. She’d been planning to come out to visit for the summer. At the airport, we waited for her to get off the plane. I was told to look for a small blonde girl, and I swear I hadn’t seen one small blonde girl. She never came. In hindsight, it was also odd, because my sister and parents were acting a little strange. They seemed to be acting too excited for my sister’s friend to be arriving. I continued watching for her, but all of a sudden a guy came up to me. At first I felt like someone was invading my personal bubble, but then when I realized who it was I jumped out of my skin.

[Tweet “The one time Johan came for a surprise visit! This is our engagement story:”]

He had told me he was going to visit his parents in Perth, Australia. (At that time he lived in Brisbane, Australia.) So he orchestrated the whole visit with my parents and his. He had to account for the moments he was on the plane, so he even had his mom text me something like “Hello Love, I arrived in Perth. My phone died, so just thought I’d text ya from my mum’s phone to let you know I made it. I’m going to bed now! Love you!”

I didn’t even question it.

He really got me good. They all did.

What I’m Grateful For…

Every year around this time people start thinking about the things they are grateful for. It’s a season filled with warm conversations around the dining room table with your family. Board games and mulled apple cider are a staple many families include, as well as that turkey-dinner coma after eating first Thanksgiving dinner, second Thanksgiving dinner, and third-sies. It’s perfection. Maybe not calorie-wise, but definitely relaxation-wise!

I’m Grateful For My Favorite Holiday

For me, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It’s Thanksgiving and Christmas that are my absolutely favorites!

I’ve sort of created a blog tradition of mine and every year I write a post focused around what I’m thankful for this year. So that’s what this post is going to be.

This year, I’m thankful for:

  • That I have a relationship with the most-high, the king of all!
  • Health for me and my family.
  • That we have Johan’s green card!!
  • That my husband is so encouraging and lifts me up when I need it.
  • I’m also thankful for a wonderfully blessed first year of marriage! Here’s to many, many, many more!

What I'm thankful for, devin joubert

  • That my entire family (Johan’s side and mine) are all safe. That God has been watching over us all.
  • For the chance to work for myself.
  • I’m also thankful for Mary Kay and that she came up with the idea she did 50 years ago. Little did she know that, that idea would help me move ahead in my dreams. Also thankful because Mary Kay has gotten me on track to knowing God better as well, while also enriching other women’s lives.
  • I’m thankful I get to do life on my terms. No more rushing back to the office because I’m a minute late and afraid the micromanagers are going to get annoyed. Petty.
  • So thankful for our cuddly kitten, Loki who is the biggest love bug and yet the craziest bug hunter we know.

What I'm thankful for, devin joubert

  • I’m so thankful that Johan loves his job as a drafter at a general contractor.
  • Thankful we have a roof over our heads, heat and electricity, and even thought it might seem strange, I’m also thankful for the internet.
  • I’m also thankful for BSF and my BF leader. BSF has really pushed Johan and I to learn more about God.

There are so many things to be thankful for this year.

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? Let me know in the comments.

How To Plan A Wedding With Less Stress

I sat at my parent’s kitchen table with a large checklist in front of me and the list of people we were inviting to our wedding. Emotions and events from the week had snuck up and weighed me down. It really overwhelmed me. And since my then fiancé was too far away to give me a hug, it was just harder than it needed to be.

[Tweet “Want to plan a wedding with less stress? If so, this will help:”]

Wedding planning can go a little like that. Emotions. And it doesn’t help even more when outside stresses push on you as well.

Want To Create A Fit Life?

Want to be healthy and creative? Want to live your best life possible?

If so, read on for some great tips on creating a fit life.

how to exercise

I want to be upfront and entirely truthful with you. I feel that’s one big thing that is really missing, today. I want you to feel happy with who you are. And because of that, I want to share with you my story and some things that will help you!

I stepped onto the scale. A number I wasn’t happy about appeared, making me feel depressed. Utterly shocked.

At that moment, I was the heaviest I’d ever been. It made me upset with myself. How did I let myself come to this? I decided I couldn’t live like this any longer. So I picked up the pieces and started constructing a path back to the “me” I wanted to be. You can also do this!

Have you ever felt this way?

If so, right now is the moment your life is going to change.

Make a promise to yourself that you aren’t going to be who the mirror or the scale tells you that you are.

Seeing It in Others

Not too long ago, I was out shopping with my fiancé and my wifi connection was very bad inside the store, so I went outside to try get a better signal. And don’t ask! I have no idea why the wifi was so horrible inside and so good outside.

I kept myself busy while waiting, as I always do. Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved watching people. I wanted to know what people’s stories were. It must be the fiction writer in me. . .

I stood there waiting as a heavier woman walked toward the store entrance (let’s call her “Sue”), as an average woman in a bright dress walked out of the store (how about we call her “Anna”).

“I love your dress!” Sue said.

“Thanks!” Anna smiled, walking past Sue.

Once Anna was far enough away, Sue uttered in a hopeful yet doubtful tone, “I wish I could wear a dress like that . . .”

I don’t think she knew I’d heard her. It struck a chord in my heart.

I saw Sue disappear into the store, but I really wanted to run after her and give her a hug. I wanted to tell her, “You can wear the dress. You are worthy. You are beautiful and have everything it takes to get there. You just need to see it and decide what you’re going to do. You need to choose yourself.”

I did it. I know you can too.

You can achieve anything you want to if only you start. That’s the true heart of this book. The Chinese poet and philosopher Lao-tzu said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Are you ready to take the first step?

Your Journey Begins Now

Your journey begins now, with choosing yourself. Just as it did for me. It’s important to choose yourself because if you don’t, who is going to? And you deserve it.

We only have one life, so it’s important to choose ourselves, now, so we can live full and amazing lives, doing and loving what we do. In this chapter, you will find creative projects that will help you start out on this journey to create the fit life you want to live. First, I want to share with you a note for the journey ahead.

I want to fill you in with all of the amazing things that you are going to experience in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

You wake up in the morning and pull on your skinny jeans. You feel comfortable. There isn’t a muffin top or spare tire around your waist. You don’t feel any bit of discomfort.

The jeans aren’t tight around your waist or legs. No more feeling like a stuffed turkey on Thanksgiving Day or a stuffed sausage. I know—gross image, but still, you know what I mean!

You head down the stairs of your apartment and feel no pain in your knees. Then when you get into your car and buckle your seat belt, you don’t feel your stomach bulging over your seat belt.

The button on your jeans doesn’t feel like it’s about to burst, and you don’t have to unbutton it to sit comfortably. I know, maybe that was too much information as well. Your seatbelt is resting flatly against your stomach.

When you walk into your art gallery, you feel like your smile is changing the world. And it is. People will see the difference. You don’t just feel like a changed woman on the outside, but you feel like you’ve changed on the inside too.

When you live with confidence, you’ll also make a difference in others’ lives. People will ask you how you’ve changed your life around and how you lost the weight. They may even notice how happy you look.

This, my friend, is the future you. You are just months away from meeting her. She rocks and she knows it! But not in a cocky way!

When you are a creative professional who takes care of yourself, people will take you more seriously. It’s sad, but true.

Since there are great and awesome things ahead, I want to tell you that the good doesn’t come without some bad.

Here are some tougher things that may be ahead:

When these possible joy stealers come knocking, try to ignore them.

  • Your little critic will try and get you to quit. How is it that our worst enemy is sometimes us?
  • Not wanting to get up earlier in the morning to get your gym time in before work.
  • The tempting candy you found in the closet from last Halloween.
  • The moments when being lazy sounds nicer than the great feeling you have after accomplishing a workout.
  • Doubt that you’ll ever be able to reach your goals.
  • Comparison. If you see a woman who is ahead of you in the fit life, comparison will only steal your joy and make you feel like you’re not achieving enough.
  • Low self-esteem and wanting to give up.

Don’t let your little critic devour your joy with these emotional trolls.

Throughout the book, I will give you creative challenges to do or think about. I believe that our creativity has a huge impact in our fit journey.

how to be positive

YOUR CHALLENGE

To begin your journey, take up this challenge. Find pictures and paste them onto a sheet. You are going to make a vision board. Actually, you are going to make two vision-type picture boards.

Your Two Picture Boards:

1. What-I-Want-To-Change Board

With this board, you are going to find pictures of what you consider to be unhealthy habits or what you feel unconfident about in your life.

Some examples that different people might have:

  • Pictures of cigarettes = I want to quite smoking.
  • A picture of unhealthy food = I want to stop overeating and lose weight.
  • A picture of a computer = I want to stop wasting time on the Internet and get active instead.

Use your imagination. Don’t get down on yourself with this board. This is a challenge to identify what things you aren’t happy with. But don’t body shame or be too hard on yourself!

2. Vision Board

With this board, you are going to find pictures of things that will inspire you during this fit journey.

Some examples:

• A bikini = I want to be able to wear a bikini confidently.

• A bright bowl of fruit = I want to eat more fruit.

• A runner running a race = I want to run a half marathon.

Doing this challenge will make your goals seem MORE attainable.

You can achieve anything if only you put your mind to it. You can and you will!

Creative, it’s your time to start.

Now.

Small Pep Talk:

Now, in order for any of this to work, you need to be all in.

You must do the hard work.

The results will amaze you and others.

Why Are People Encouraging Division?

I have been thinking a lot about Facebook recently. There is so much negativity, hate, and division on there.photo-1453974336165-b5c58464f1ed

I can definitely see the division in our country when I’m on there. And what makes me so mad is that it really seems like Facebook isn’t doing anything to make matters better. Why is the country so divided?

Why is it okay to be rude if you don’t agree with someone?

There is a young lady, Tomi Lahren, who is speaking out. Finally, someone is speaking out about all the problems that most people are either avoiding or aren’t speaking out about on main news channels.

I majored in English/mass communications and I was taught that the media is supposed to be society’s “Watch Dog” but lately it’s seems more like the media is acting like the president’s play poodle lap dog.

When are more Americans going to stand up?

I decided to reach out to Tomi to tell her that she is doing the right thing. If I were getting attacked for doing good, I’d have wanted people to stand up next to me.

So I wrote on her Facebook page and then…

Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 2.14.14 PM

And I never said anything mean.

But then these two people wrote under my comment. It was hate speech. How could someone say such rude things. These are words that separate people and don’t unite people.  Why is it that when it comes to all of these Black Lives Matter and radical groups that they are extremely hateful and mean.

These are words that separate people. They don’t unite people.  Why is it that when it comes to all of these Black Lives Matter and radical groups that they are extremely hateful and mean.

I reported the comments to Facebook to have them removed. But to my surprise, I got a response that said that Facebook doesn’t consider that hate speech. When was it ever right to tell someone to eat a D***? Or saying that someone’s dad is a clansman? Or when was it ever right to say that all whites should burn? To me, that sounds like racism and hate speech.

Seriously? Is this what humanity has come to?

A few other people also reported those FB comments but got the same responses from Facebook.

I seriously can’t support something that is so evil. I am thinking about taking a break from Facebook for awhile. I can’t support a platform that doesn’t stand behind the values of America or that supports hate speech and the act of tearing apart the country.

Visit Tomi Lahren’s Facebook page and you will be sure to find more trolls speaking out hate against her. Give Tomi some love. And if you get a chance… report the trolls who are doing “hate speech”. Maybe Facebook will finally do something about it.

This has never been an okay way to act.

Shame on you Facebook!

How To Stay Positive Amidst The Struggles of Life

It can be difficult when life gets you down. Everything is going good and then out of nowhere it just seems like a tornado drops out of the sky and turns your world upside down. Ever felt that way? I know I have.

It can be hard to stay positive when you feel anything but happy. But, you don’t have to sink down into the dumps all the way.

To me, it seems when one thing is turned upside down that it’s very easy to have other areas of your life turn into un-stable ground as well. Situations that resemble sinking sand and the people whose words feel like a sword piercing your chest have a magnetic pull on you. In these kinds of situations, you need to tread carefully.

Here are some tips on how to stay positive even when life is hard.

These are my top goals for 2016. But I am breaking down the months in 2016 and coming up with some smaller goals that will help me accomplish the bigger goals above.

This is going to be a great year! I am getting married this year!

I’m also hoping and praying for an agent this year!

What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

Christmas Cheers & Blessings (Year In REWIND)

Christmas is almost here. I love this time of the year. Everything about it.

Love it when it looks like a snow globe outside with the gorgeous snowflakes swirling around. Especially when I’m inside sitting by the fireplace with a comfy sweater on and fuzzy socks.

If I had to choose one word for this year, I’d have to say the word would be: transitional. I feel like I’ve been living in boxes throughout the year. It was a great year where I accomplished tons.

Here are some pictures and memories from the last year!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (NANOWRIMO STARTS TOMORROW!)

Happy Halloween!!

When I think of Halloween, I remember crisp evenings going door to door with my parents, siblings, and friends. We had jacko-lantern candy baskets and said “Trick or treat!” in our cute little outfits that varied. Some looked like they were straight out of a fairytale, movie, or story. It was a lovely time to just spend with family and friends. Also remember watching Halloween Town with my siblings. That was such an awesome movie!

But, since it is HALLOWEEN TODAY… what’s that mean for WRITERS?

NaNoWriMo!!

What normal person writes 50,000 words in ONE month?

YES… WAY OVERRATED. I don’t like the word normal.
