What You Can Learn About Marketing From Vegas (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly)

 Marketing is very important. Don’t mess it up!

I was just recently in Vegas. I looked out the hotel window of Ceasar’s Palace. All the neon lights lit up the night sky. The Bellagio fountains went off in sync to a song and hundreds of people walked the Vegas strip. It got me thinking about marketing.

What could make a bunch of people come from all over to a small oasis in the middle of a desert.

The big M word.

Yep, MARKETING.

Have you ever felt like your brand is a small oasis in the middle of a desert, just waiting to be found? If so, read on. You will find out some of the good, the bad, and the ugly of Vegas Marketing. 

The Good

1. Free Stuff – Who doesn’t love FREE stuff?

In Vegas, I’ve gone to quite a few Cirque shows. They always sell over priced souvenir booklets with photos from the show. I recently went to Le Reve and found out they actually give you a free book as you walk in. A big souvenir booklet with glossy photos. For FREE.

Another thing, I’ve found in most shows is that there is no photography allowed. In Le Reve, they allow people to take non flash photography and encourage you to share on social media with a hashtag.

Challenge Yourself:
• Give stuff away for free.
• Have an opt in gift that you can give them.
• Make sure to put helpful content and information up that will truly help your audience.

2. Nice Design –

The Casinos do a really good job at making their hotels pretty and pleasing to the eye. That really pulls people in. While I was there, I went to a spa in Caesar’s Palace. It was beautiful, serene, and relaxing. So nice compared to the strip.

Challenge Yourself:
• Make your website pretty and a place that your audience wants to be.

The Bad

1. Being Pushy –

If you’ve ever been to Vegas, you have probably seen the clickers. They are pushy men and women with small pornographic cards (the size of business cards) and they click them in your face as you walk by. Sooner or later those same cards litter the streets of the Strip.

Challenge Yourself:
• Don’t be annoying.

-On twitter, NEVER send personal messages with “Buy my book for only 99 cents at this link.” This is a big no no. You automatically put yourself in the clicker category when you do this. If you have this set up on your twitter, it’s a good time to undo it. Get rid of it.

-Don’t spam your email list. Try not send too many emails.

The Ugly

1. LOST – 

Don’t be lost.

When I went to a restaurant with my family for supper in Vegas, we saw a 30-something year old man drunkly walking (if you could call it walking) and his two friends held him up. He could barely walk and to top it off, he was missing a shoe. We also so a man or woman who wasn’t wearing anything, but a pink tutu, shoes, and tape on his/her chest.

Challenge Yourself:
• Writers, artists, and bloggers don’t want to be this way when marketing. You want people to know who you are.
