How to Get in Shape as a Writer – Part 1

First photo was taken in December. Third photo was taken this month.

As a writer, I sit a lot because my work is all done on the computer. But, throughout the year of 2013 I wasn’t really happy with myself. I decided to lose weight, because I could tell I’d been gaining weight. So, I decided 2014 was MY YEAR! Check out part 2.

I stepped on the scale… & I felt depressed.

Have you ever felt this way?

I am just going to be upfront and truthful with you. When I stepped on the scale I saw that I was the heaviest I’d ever weighed. This made me upset with myself. How did I let myself come to this?

But since the beginning of this year, I’ve lost 16lbs. What I’ve been doing has been working. Finally I am much more comfortable in my skin and happier.

I am a writer and I am healthy. I wasn’t always. But, I am now.

Have you ever felt depressed about your weight? Have you had low energy and a low esteem? Do you want to start getting in shape to be the healthiest you, you can be?

If you said yes, to any of the above questions then I can help you.

Best Kept Secret #1: Walking

Okay, so it isn’t really a secret. But, a person is supposed to get a minimum of 10,000 steps (which, is about 4-5 miles) a day.

It might seem like a lot, right now. But, I promise it isn’t that much.

A normal person who doesn’t get up and move during the day walks in between 1,000 – 3,000 steps a day.

See the bracelet on my arm in that picture? Yes. That is the fitbit flex. I love it.

I wanted to start getting the right amount of steps during the day. So I got a fitbit, so I could track my steps, miles, sleep, and more. Now the fitbit is an amazing tool that has helped me reach my goals. It’s inspired me to reach them. It has a smartphone app that syncs with the bracket tracker. You can check the app throughout the day to see where you are.

Each day I aim to get a minimum of 10,000 steps, but I try to shoot for more.

In February, I went on a trip to Colorado with my brother (you might remember from these pictures), but I was amazed when I got home, because I found out that I had actually lost weight during my trip, when I usually went on trips I had gained weight.

I was able to lose that weight by moving every day (walking 10,000 steps or more) and eating healthfully (and tracking it). You can get your own fitbit here!

Best Kept Secret #2: Food Diary (Track Your Intake)

I use a food diary app called myfitnesspal. I track everything that I eat and drink during the day. When you put your information into the app you will be told how many calories you should be taking in each day. It is really easy to use.

This is the beginning of my food diary for today. You will just input the food throughout the day. It really is an amazing app. Another great thing is that the fitbit syncs with the myfitnesspal app.

What About Eating Out?

Since we aren’t hermits… well, since we aren’t hermits all the time. (haha… I enjoy my hermitting hours as well! haha!) But since we have to go out into the world – we occasionally have to eat at restaurants.

My secret rule for eating healthy while out & about:

I look up on the myfitnesspal app or online for what the healthier options are for those restaurants. You’d be amazed by how many hidden calories there are in a lot of the food at restaurants.

  1. Devin-
A point to mention is that My Fitness Pal also syncs with your FitBit! Fitbit of course has a food tracker of it’s own but it definitely doesn’t have HUGE database that My Fitness Pal has.

Also, we need to link up on there when I really get started. I WAS waiting for my sister to have her baby so that I didn’t have to worry about diet and exercise while I’m home (That dreaded vacation weight gain that you spoke of), but now because she hasn’t had the baby yet I’ve been putting it off for a couple of weeks. Regardless, you’d better be ready for some serious walking competition soon!

    1. Yup, myfitnesspal also syncs with the fitbit! Isn’t it awesome! I really love it. Oh, sure… we should link up on there. I think the “getting healthy” lifestyle is way more fun with friends anyways! Totally excited you are pumped for some serious walking competition! hehe…

Thanks for coming to my blog! Hope you enjoy it.

  2. LOVE THIS! Go you!!! I’ve been working out with a group of girls here in our small town doing Crossfit since last Christmas! We are so fortunate to have something like this and it’s been so wonderful having a support group to push me & encourage me! I am AMAZED at the changes in my body. Some days I see it more than others and sometimes it feels like such a slow process! But I continue on and I am addicted now! I never would have imagined that sharing my own personal fitness journey via my blog that I’d come to find a whole new community of people through fitness who also encourage one another & push one another ONLINE! It’s been awesome! Congrats on your great work & keep it up!!

    1. I am sooo glad that you enjoyed this post, Jenny!

Isn’t it amazing to have other people to encourage and be encouraged by? 🙂 It’s so nice to have a cheer-team. haha… That is also something that I’ve noticed about my body too… after getting in a good habit of exercising daily – I’ve noticed that it becomes easier with time.

Keep up your amazing work too! 😀 Thanks for reading & commenting!!!
